About the Author

Roger has developed and built over $30MM in new construction residential and mixed-use properties in the Chicago market.

“Don’t Buy Multifamily! BUILD IT” tells you how it’s done and why it’s one of the most rewarding ways for investors to build wealth, year after year.

“Growing up in Chicago, I was always fascinated by architecture.

After starting in the commodities and securities industries, I began in real estate development in 1987 putting together limited partnerships for historical tax credit rehabs.

In the early 90’s marketing condominium conversions projects in on Chicago’s Northside I found that I just wasn’t satisfied with the quality of work that other developers were doing.

I developed and built my first new construction condo project in the mid 90’s and through the 2000’s my companies focused on architectural design, development and construction of great condo projects and a number of large luxury single-family homes in Old Town, Buck Town, Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast as well as the Portico Townhome Project in the West Loop.

During this time from 2005-2010, I also served as a Director and Head of the Real Estate Committee on the board of Ravenswood Bank in Chicago’s Lincoln Square.

Serving on the board and loan committee of a community bank specializing in construction lending during the development hay days of the 2000’s and credit crunch of 2008-2010 afforded a unique perspective and many lessons about risk and risk mitigation.

I’ve learned in the trenches, which deals are likely to run into troubles and which will stay strong if the market hits a rough patch.

Many times when I speak to successful professional people who’ve read my book and recognize the great opportunities, but have hesitated to get started because of the complexity and time commitment of owning and managing property.

For busy professionals, it makes far more sense to invest passively in new Class A multi-family developments by collaborating with an experienced professional development team to manage your investments, maximize returns and help to build your legacy.”

Testimonials

As a community banker in Chicago for over 30 years I found Roger Luri’s framework for building and profiting from multi-family properties to be a well organized and compelling presentation. Roger Luri clearly has real world experience in multi-family development and anyone interested in investing in multi-family units would do well to give this book a read.

The author does a great job of giving helpful and fruitful information in a relatively short and easy read, which is nice if you’re a busy investor. There aren’t many resources on actually building new multi-family properties, so this book is helpful in that regard. The book also had helpful charts, cash flows and equity/sales price projections that I found helpful. I would recommend this book if you’re considering multi-fam investments and have the potential to build it from scratch.

I have been involved personally in real estate development for years. This book clarified for me a solid overview of the process and made a terrific case for the reasons to look toward new construction rather than just doing rehabs.
